Statement:

I intend my paintings to operate as tools for recalibrating perception. They present a concentrated arena in which to experience simultaneous, interwoven, contradictory spaces and states of being.

Structures found within nature, technology, and architecture provide the internal organization and logic for my paintings. Through successive layers I inset intricate geometries within what seems to be sinking archipelagos and dissolving perspectival systems, which are themselves the residue left over from past layers. In this way spaces emerge, transform and then decay, always leaving a trace in the final painting. A self-imposed rule dictates that every layer remain partially visible, and to this end I use processes where all strata are interwoven through a series of cancellations and resurrections. I look for moments of intensity where the cross-communication of dissimilar patterns form a moiré effect in the mind that can lead to thinking visually in interpenetrating information fields- the main subject of my work.

Plans for your residency?

I anticipate creating a body of work that starts with a naturally occurring matrix, like a Rorschach blot, using liquid paint exposed to the forces of nature around Trondheim. These initial ”raw”images would then undergo a transformation as I weave structures from other visual languages through the original form. This network of collaborating and colliding spaces and structures taken from landscapes within and without  would offer itself as visual software for contempating complex spaces.

This idea is based on one particular facet of my current research- the phenomenon of the Asian scholar’s rock. In China and other Asian cultures the scholar’s rock operated as a suggestive window reflecting and amplifying the inner landscape of the scholar or poet. Such stones were naturally occurring complex forms etched by cave rivers over millennia. When found these stones would be delicately altered by artisans to bring out their narrative features. They would then ideally function as a net catching the subtle and fleeting structures of the inner landscape.
