[05.07.15 - 01.08.15] Jonathan Monaghan - USA

"I create sculptures and animated video installations that challenge the boundaries between the real, the imagined, and virtual".

Jonathan Monaghan fra USA

Name:  Jonathan Monaghan

Nationality: USA

Homeland: USA

Town: New York

Age: 28

How long are you resident? From July 5 until August 1 ?

Have you been in Trondheim before? - No

Do you wish to get in touch with somebody in Trondheim?

Is it something you look forward to…? - I look forward to producing new work in an exciting new environment. In terms of the residency aiding my career, I would like to expand on the success of previous screenings of my work in Oslo and Stavanger and make new connections into the Norwegian and European art world.

About you work

Discipline: video installation, prints, sculpture

Technique: computer animation and 3D modelling

I create sculptures and animated video installations that challenge the boundaries between the real, the imagined, and virtual. Pulling from wide-ranging sources such as science fiction and Gothic architecture, I compose bizarre, yet compelling, virtual environments and stories with the same high-end technology used by Hollywood and video games. While the animations are sleek and realistic, the narratives are disjointed and ambiguous, offering a nightmarish edge in which the viewer remains trapped in an endless loop of seductive but ultimately vacuous simulation where meanings don’t quite materialize.

Plans for your residency? - During my time at LKV, I intend to begin production on a computer-animated video installation.  Like much of my work, I intend the animation to draw from a wide range of sources. These include Nordic mythology and Gothic architecture, both of which Trondheim is uniquely positioned to offer. I'll combine these references into fantastical scenes seemingly from an alternate reality, where elements from contemporary culture coexist with an antiquated past. Both familiar and alien, the work plays with our desires, dreams and anxiety.
