[01.03.14 - 31.03.14] Daisy Jordan - UK

“ My current mission is to combine Fine Art with performance, perhaps exploring the space between sculpture and puppetry, and between the artist and the viewer/audience; drawing upon the intimacy of the one-to-one exchange between the viewer and a piece of art in a gallery space with the informality and playful nature of a puppet show."

Daisy Jordan fra England

Name: Daisy Jordan

Nationality: British

Homeland: England

Town: Brighton

Age: 27

How long are you resident? From 1st March until 31st March

Have you been in Trondheim before? No, never!

Do you wish to get in touch with somebody in Trondheim? I don’t know anyone who lives in Trondheim, but I am extremely excited about meeting all the other artists at the center, and also people living in Trondheim. I love meeting new people and hearing their stories – indeed, I love stories, and my work is very much inspired by folk tales and beliefs.

Is it something you look forward to…? I am really looking forward to my residency in Trondheim! It is my first residency, and the first time I have been away as an artist. I am very excited about being in a new environment, exploring the city and landscape and gathering new ideas.

About you work

Discipline: Installation, sculpture, puppetry

Technique: Collecting, making, drawing, painting, building, manipulating

Statement: I have been working with puppetry for the last four years, and have a background in Fine Art. My current mission is to combine Fine Art with performance, perhaps exploring the space between sculpture and puppetry, and between the artist and the viewer/audience; drawing upon the intimacy of the one-to-one exchange between the viewer and a piece of art in a gallery space with the informality and playful nature of a puppet show.  My work tends to explore the tension between reality and the imaginary, life and death, and the human and the animal. I am also interested in liminal space, and in the temporary, the transient and the ephemeral. Puppets can articulate this beautifully as they embody life and death at once. They express the transient, cyclical nature of life and human experience. Lifeless objects, yet serving as vessels for human life, they are mediators between us (the living), and the land of objects. Existing between states, they almost become mythical beings, like ghosts and vampires and the living dead. They embody our human desire to believe.
These are ideas I hope to evoke in my work, as an artist, maker of puppets and as a performer. I create by collecting information through drawing and writing, inspired by stories and encounters, and translating this to puppetry.

Plans for your residency? I will spend my time exploring the landscape and my surroundings, and gathering information by collecting objects, writing and making drawings, and then perhaps translate this into some sort of installation.
